Baiganwadi community health centre: |
| |
Baiganwadi and Shivaji Nagar are two mega slum
areas at Deonar, Mumbai. The Bainganwadi area with
over 2.5 Lakh population has a static and a large
migrant population mainly from UP and Bihar. Child
marriages, polygamy, addiction, high school drop
out rate, poor hygiene and sanitation facilities,
high rate of infections and communicable diseases
are prevalent in the community. Niramaya runs two
health centers in the area since last seven years
to look after the health needs of the communities.
We offer curative, preventive and promotive health
care through these clinics and through community
home visits. There is daily general outdoor,
special weekly gynecological outdoor and monthly
Eye check up camp at the clinic with referral
facilities for special cases. On home visits,
special emphasis is given to looking after
children under two years, lactating and pregnant
mothers and adolescent girls. Health educations
sessions are conducted both in the clinics and in
the community. |

Tribal
Health Care Program in Nasik district |
| |
This is a new program undertaken by Niramaya to
provide primary health care to the tribal
communities in the Peth taluka of Nasik district.
Peth taluka is situated 80 km from Nasik city. (Nasik
city is located 125 km from Mumbai). Some of these
tribal villages lack basic amenities like roads,
electricity and water and the Govt. health care
centers are very far and not easily accessible to
the population. Niramaya with assistance from
Glaxo SmithKline run two health centers providing
primary health care & set up a referral network
for management of serious cases. The clinics offer
services to people from surrounding 20 villages,
these people sometimes walk as much as 10 to 15
kilometers to get the services. Sometimes patients
come from as far as 20 kms. The total population
covered is about 10000 to 15000. Besides the two
static clinics, Niramaya also conducts mobile van
checkups in two other villages. Health education
sessions on pregnancy related issues like
antenatal care and importance of iron therapy,
child rearing practices, family planning, and
addictions are conducted routinely in the clinics
and in the homes. Special emphasis is given to
dispel myths and misconceptions and superstitions,
which are highly prevalent in these tribal
communities. |
